Exploring *Internal & *External Creative Environments   ~ Spring Chunk Selections
An Inconsequential Retro-Analysis of Subconscious Relativity, Objectivity, & Business:

Welcome to art{space} magazine online. Started in 2001, art{space} magazine embraces two fundamental, complementary realms of the creative environment: the internal and external art{space}. As previously discussed*, internal art{space} is highly subjective, and revealed primarily through expressive commentary on art-related topics. Personal philosophies, theoretical dialogues, and symbolic analyses contribute to the understanding and appreciation of the creative nature of expression.

External art{space}, conversely, explores artists' diverse artistic studios, supplies, and software. Focusing on the objective world of creativity, art{space} reveals artistic nature through the investigation of studio, art, and artist. art{space} externally examines everything involved in the creation of art, from computers and music to organizational principles and production methods. Taken together, internal and external art{space} go hand in hand to provide a rich and insightful look into the private world of creative & artistic space.

Plus, in addition to art{space} features, we also offer, via our online *archives, the underground *small~talk articles (see below for more info). Only here will you find digital recreations of the original, limited-edition small~talk releases, which were printed exclusively for the infamous Northwest art-zine, *Dead Letter Art. These rare small~talk articles have been painstakingly recreated in vivid detail for you to read, critique, and enjoy. So, kick back, dive in, and go off...

One grey afternoon while casually browsing for chunks, I found myself lost and wandering through the maze-like labyrinth that is the UW Medical Center. After dodging a couple of scientists, I found myself in some sort of informational alcove just plastered with the business. After several minutes of digging, I struck this fine chunk of gold ( Figure .01 ) within a brochure that had been stapled to the bulletin board. The original chunk is printed on nice card stock in subtle cmyk hues, all sweet.
-- A real find.

Stripping the prime chunks out of old, torn-up magazines, I stumbled upon this plump lil' biscuit, which seems to fuse organic shapes with mechanical complexities, rendering an abstract cascade of ominous impressions. Figure .02 offers a detail from the original, which provides an extensive continuation of the forms and patterns represented in the detail chunk offered above.

I stared at this juicy turd for weeks before finding the right opportunity to boost it straight out of the 2004 Company Calendar. Figure .03 ( above ) represents a slightly cropped version of the chunk, which is printed on some choice semi-gloss card stock. I eventually lifted the entire calendar, surprised nobody beat me to the kill. The company sure won't miss it, but I will never be same.

art{space} Features the Esoteric & Obscure DLa small~talk Articles:

Dead Letter Art's underground small~talk articles primarily focus on the discussion of art and artistic principles, and is generally more abstract, esoteric, and verbose than the typical art{space} feature. Essentially, small~talk is creative, expressive writing that explores art & creativity existentially, theoretically, and without apology. Although small~talk is not perfect for everyone, several readers have indeed found the material of relative interest. Nonetheless, even the sharpest critics of small~talk admit that “seeing some words in your 'zine is better than just looking at a bunch of pictures." Examples of small~talk topics include graffiti politics, subconscious prophecy, and artistic cannibalism.

Further, several small~talk articles were co-authored and featured alongside various art{space} releases in early issues of Dead Letter Art. Thus, art{space} magazine online has digitally replicated and archived these treasures for your enjoyment, amusement, or utter dismissal. You can check out the entire collection of previously published small~talk articles *here, in the art{space} online archives.
